The Christmas Week Ahead 21st – 25th December 2020

Today’s Market Outlook

This week is set to be quiet as traders wind down for the holidays. Relatively few economic and earnings reports are set for release, and virtually all of these will be packed into the first three days of the week.

The stock market is set to close early on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET in observance of Christmas Eve, and close all day Friday in observance of Christmas. The bond market will end trading early at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday and close on Friday as well.

Overview for the Week Ahead

Investors’ focus over the coming week will continue to be on Brexit as talks carry over into the final weeks of 2020.

There is also likely to be keen interest around all news related to the new Covid-19 strain detected in the UK which has forced government’s hand on tightening lockdowns in the London and the Southeast or the country.

Against that backdrop, first thing on Tuesday morning, the Office for National Statistics will publish public sector net borrowing data for November, alongside a final reading on third quarter gross domestic product.

Stateside, the key day for economic reports will be Wednesday, with readings due out, among other, on weekly jobless claims, durable goods orders and consumer confidence.

Across the Channel meanwhile, euro area consumer confidence data are due out on Monday.

All these events and more have the potential to influence the markets which means there is plenty of trading opportunities.
