The Week Ahead: 11th – 15th September 2023

Overview for the Week Ahead

First up, Apple’s big event where the tech giant is expected to launch its highly anticipated iPhone 15. The debut coming after shares took a huge hit this week, following reports that China is going to broaden its ban on iPhones for government employees and state businesses.

Also, get the latest check on inflation. CPI, the Fed’s favourite measure, could give investors clues on future Fed policy. Prices did cool last month. But energy prices have jumped since then, potentially complicating the Fed’s battle to tame inflation.

Economists and markets are both effectively split over this week’s ECB decision, and whether a new rate hike is on the horizon on Thursday.

While inflation remains sticky and well above the ECB’s target of 2% — a backdrop that warrants higher rates — signs are mounting that growth is deteriorating. That’s providing fertile ground for bets against the common currency, which has already dropped nearly 5% since mid-July in the longest streak of weekly losses since 2014.
