The Week Ahead: 26th – 30th June 2023

Overview for the Week Ahead

The euro had its worst week since May and the pound fell on concern the Bank of England risks triggering a contraction. Traders rushed to the safety of the dollar.

Attention turns to the European Central Bank’s main conference in Sintra, Portugal. Traders will parse the latest rumblings of top officials from the ECB, Federal Reserve, Bank of England and others for a read on how much more they’re looking to squeeze borrowers. The latest euro-area inflation numbers and German Ifo print will also prove key.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is scheduled to publish the results of its annual stress test of large banks on Wednesday, the first of its kind following a string of bank failures in the spring.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, ECB President Christine Lagarde, BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda and BoE Governor Andrew Bailey are likely to speak at the ECB Forum on Central Banking on Wednesday.

Separately, Powell and Bank of Spain’s governor Pablo Hernández de Cos are expected to participate in a dialogue at a conference on financial sustainability on Thursday.
